Cinco de Mayo: Cause for Celebration

Decked out in ponchos and sombreros, Manhattan Beach residents party like it's 1862.

Cinco de Mayo is a day that commemorates the Mexican army's surprise victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Or—as it is known north of the border—an official opportunity to toss back shots of tequila with chasers of Mexican beer.

Manhattan Beach residents turned out in force yesterday at local Mexican-themed restaurants to—ahem—celebrate our neighbor to the South's heritage and pride.

Despite popular notions to the contrary, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, which falls on Sept. 16. All the more reason for celebrants to keep their social calendars open at the end of summer.
