Esther Williams: Male Manhattan Beach Lifeguards Gave Her a Start

Iconic swimming legend and actress Esther Williams died Thursday in California at the age of 91.

Early on in her career, the Inglewood, CA native reportedly took jobs at local pools and in Manhattan Beach, where she received swimming lessons from male lifeguards who taught the ‘male only’ strokes, including the butterfly, which she then swam in competition to win medals and break records.
