Juneteenth: Union Soldiers Declare Slaves Free

In California, Juneteenth is a state holiday. After the first Juneteenth, a shift in the number of African-Americans who migrated west to Southern California was recorded.

Today, June 19, marks the day when the last remaining slaves in the United States were freed.

The day is known as Juneteenth. The year was 1865.

On June 19—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in 1863—Union soldiers landed in Galveston, TX with news that the Civil War had ended and slaves had been freed.
