A Saturday/Sunday DUI checkpoint by the Manhattan Beach Police Department resulted in seven arrests for driving under the influence, 17 citations for unlicensed driving, one citation for a suspended license, one citation for a vehicle code violation and one DMV/court probation violation, said Sgt. Chris Vargas.

The checkpoint was set-up near Artesia Boulevard and Prospect Avenue, and began at 8 p.m. Saturday, ending at 3 a.m. Sunday.

“In Manhattan Beach, we take drunk driving very seriously," said Chief of Police Eve R. Irvine. "We conduct DUI checkpoints, DUI task forces, and through ABC grants, we focus our efforts on educating and regulating alcohol-related incidents.

"In just 2012 alone, Manhattan Beach officers made 370 arrests for impaired driving," she said. "All of it is worth it if one life can be saved, if one person thinks first before driving drunk, and if one more family does not have to say goodbye to their loved one who was killed in a drunk driving incident.”
