Jackie's South Bay Weekend Guide for June 5, 2014

Greetings from Venice! By the time you receive this, I’ll be on my way back to the South Bay - just in time to attend a couple of events happening this weekend that I don’t want to miss!

The unveiling of the Meistrell Memorial at Seaside Lagoon will take place at 4 p.m. today, Thursday, June 5. Bob and Bill Meistrell, co-founders of Body Glove International and inventors of the modern day wetsuit, are being honored for their contributions to the diving and surfing industries. The Memorial will consist of benches, a statue of the twin brothers and bricks engraved with donor names. The unveiling will coincide with the Grand Opening of the new Dive N Surf/Body Glove International Headquarters. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place at the new facility immediately following the Memorial dedication at 5 p.m. The celebration includes music, food, drinks and tours of the new facility. Seaside Lagoon is located at 200 Portofino Way in Redondo Beach. The Ribbon Cutting will take place at 504 North Broadway in Redondo Beach. The celebration will continue afterward at Waterman’s in Hermosa Beach. If you plan to attend, RSVP to dinah@bodyglove.com.

Graffiti and tattoo artists will leave their mark on El Segundo to launch the first public display of the Getty Graffiti Black Book during Experience 11: SCRATCH, opening June 8 at El Segundo Museum of Art. Many of LA’s most influential graffiti and tattoo artists will cover the walls and floors of ESMoA to publicly launch their twenty first century encounter with an artistic tradition: The Getty Graffiti Black Book. The contributing artists decided to give the Getty Black Book the title, LA Liber Amicorum, to capture the spirit of its transformation of rival ‘writing-crews’ into a Los Angeles Book of Friends. Now, ESMoA and the Getty Research Institute have invited Getty Black Book artists Axis, Cre8, Defer, Eye One, Fishe, and Miner to co-curate those crews of creative friends from the LA graffiti art community and turn the art laboratory of ESMoA into an open black book. Graffiti and tattoo artists will transform the space into a cathedral of urban art for the first presentation of the LA Liber Amicorum to the public with SCRATCH. The exhibit runs from June 8 through September 21. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.ESMoA.org or call 424-277-1020. ESMoA is located at 208 Main Street in El Segundo.
