550 Arrests Made in Anti-DUI Crackdown

The "Avoid the 100" campaign to combat driving under the influence involved 100 law-enforcement deployments across the county, including Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach.

A countywide weekend crackdown on drunken and drug-impaired motorists resulted in 550 arrests, authorities reported Monday.

The "Avoid the 100" campaign, which ran from Friday night through late Sunday, involved 100 deployments countywide. Last year during the same period, 663 DUI arrests were made, said Glendora police Officer Wendy Brewer, an Avoid coordinator.

The Avoid program is part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

In the coming days, extra DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols are planned in cities across the county, including Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Torrance.

The Avoid campaign will also be on the streets during the California Highway Patrol's "Maximum Enforcement Period" Labor Day weekend. During the MEP, 80 percent of the CHP's officers hit the streets to nab intoxicated motorists, speeders and other traffic violators.
