Wrote Manhattan Beach firefighter Matt Simkins in an email to Patch:
"The impression I had of Carlos during his time with us was that of a highly motivated, engaging and responsible young man. There was no doubt in my mind that he would not only succeed in his career pursuits, but would represent the best of the fire service.
During Carlos' time with Hermosa Fire he did nothing but reinforce my initial impression(s). To the best of my knowledge, Carlos was deeply involved in the workings of the HBFD and had recently taken on the additional responsibility of completing his Bachelor's Degree.
Carlos embodied the drive, dedication and self sacrifice present within the HBFD as well as the fire service in general.
He brought a smile to my face every time we crossed paths.
I will miss him."
