Manhattan Beach Remembers Firefighter Carlos Lopez

Carlos Lopez, 36, a Hermosa Beach firefighter who died last Tuesday, will be memorialized at a funeral service Tuesday.
Lopez worked as a reserve with the Manhattan Beach Fire Department before taking a full-time job with Hermosa Beach, said Ken Shuck, battalion Chief with the Manhattan Beach Fire Department.

Manhattan Beach firefighters will attend the service Tuesday, he told Patch.

The Redondo Beach resident came to Patch's attention when he provided medical aid to a stabbing victim while off duty and in Belmont Shores in Long Beach.
"We're very sad for the loss," said Shuck, who confirmed that Manhattan Beach firefighters covered for Hermosa Beach firefighters this past weekend so they could honor Lopez by participating in the Scott Firefighter Challenge held in their city. Lopez had planned to compete in the challenge.

Wrote Manhattan Beach firefighter Matt Simkins in an email to Patch:

"The impression I had of Carlos during his time with us was that of a highly motivated, engaging and responsible young man. There was no doubt in my mind that he would not only succeed in his career pursuits, but would represent the best of the fire service.

During Carlos' time with Hermosa Fire he did nothing but reinforce my initial impression(s). To the best of my knowledge, Carlos was deeply involved in the workings of the HBFD and had recently taken on the additional responsibility of completing his Bachelor's Degree.

Carlos embodied the drive, dedication and self sacrifice present within the HBFD as well as the fire service in general.

He brought a smile to my face every time we crossed paths.

I will miss him."
