5 Things to Know About MB: Police Training, Beach Volleyball, and a Life Saved

Macey Malone beats Parvo virus, Lido holds a Mexican cooking class, our police officers train for critical incidents, and there's plenty of beach volleyball.

Hey, Manhattan Beach! There's always plenty going on in town. Here are five things to know about.

1. If you were anywhere near Mira Costa High School last Saturday, you probably saw the big flashing signs in the street that said police training was going on. Those big road signs are out again today and Saturday as the Manhattan Beach Police Department conducts two more days of Critical Incident Response training on the high school campus.

If you need to go on the campus, do stay behind all yellow police tape and barricades and obey signs and any directions given to you by police and fire department staff. Role players in each active shooter scenario that is being staged wear protective eye gear even though non-lethal ammunition is being used. Those close to the school may hear loud gun shots.

The training gives police officers and fire personnel the opportunity to prepare for real-life situations that could occur and primes them to "stop the threat," Detective Mike Rosenberger told Manhattan Beach Patch.

Police and fire vehicles, including the Mobile Command Center, will be parked in the school's administration lot accessed from Artesia Boulevard.

Police department and Manhattan Beach Community Emergency Response Team volunteers are helping with the training.

2. The Charlie Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament is here on the beach just south of the pier next Saturday, July 30 and the Manhattan Beach Police Department will have its full force on duty. Hired security will also be on hand. More than 50,000 people turned out for last year's event, which concludes on Sunday, July 31 this year.

3. You don't have to go far to go "South of the Border," just participate in Lido di Manhattan Ristorante & Bar's cooking class tomorrow at noon. Students will learn how to make margaritas and a Mexican feast. Lesson plan, lunch and unlimited margaritas for $55 per person.

4. It's a charming story of love and a life saved. Read all about cute Aussie Shepherd Macey Malone's lifesaving hospital stay and how her owners raised money to help save her from the clutches of Parvo virus. Thanks to generous donations from Patch readers and others, Macey is home. A big "Thank You" to all MB Patchers who helped out.

5. If you're into beach volleyball, you'll find tournaments happening in Manhattan Beach this Saturday and Sunday. California Beach Volleyball Association is holding tournaments on the beach at Rosecrans Avenue Saturday and Sunday and women's competition at the pier on Sunday. Tournaments start in the morning and last most of the day.
