CERT Seeks Helping Hand from City, Residents

The president of the local disaster preparedness group says it needs money and volunteers because earthquakes affecting Southern California are increasing in frequency and size.

An estimated 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the California-Mexico border late Tuesday afternoon, a reported aftershock from last month's 7.2 shaker in Mexicali.

George Butts, president of the city's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), used the opportunity to address the organization's ongoing need for volunteers and city money at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

CERT members are trained by and work with the Manhattan Beach Fire Department to assist in the event of a major emergency or disaster.

"We've come a long way, but we still need the support and some money out of the city," Butts told council members, who discussed the city's proposed 2010-11 operating budget at the meeting. "So don't chop us; we're moving forward."
