City Makes Time for Earth Hour and Earth Week

It's "lights out" for the good of the planet.

Manhattan Beach is attempting to grow greener by the hour and the week.

The City Council in February endorsed city participation in Earth Hour from 8:30 - 9:30pm Saturday, March 27, and it named April 17-23 as Manhattan Beach Earth Week.

Earth Hour is a symbolic event recognized around the world to encourage energy conservation. At 8:30pm on the day of the event, the city will turn off all non-essential lighting, including lighting on the pier.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to join in the effort, which will be the City of Manhattan Beach's third annual participation in the event. Learn about more activities by visiting the Earth Hour Web site.

At the same February meeting, the council also proclaimed April 17-23 as Manhattan Beach Earth Week in honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. A series of activities are planned to raise environmental awareness throughout the community.

The celebrations will kick off with the city's first annual Earth Day Festival in Polliwog Park on Saturday, April 17, followed by similar green-themed events all week long.

More information on activities and events will be available at the city's Earth Week tent at the Farmers' Market on Tuesday, April 20, as well as on the Going Green section of the city's Web site as the date approaches.
