The Best Events for This Weekend: Fourth of July Edition

Celebrate the long weekend with fun outdoor activities, concerts and fireworks! Happy Independence Day!

Where/When: Brixton, 100 Fishermans Wharf, Redondo Beach; July 1, 9 p.m.

Why Go: The Everclear frontman strikes out on his own to play this intimate venue. Alexakis will perform well-known hits from the '90s as well as new solo work from his forthcoming album.

Why Go: The roots-style reggae band celebrates the release of their latest album with opening acts Seedless, the Floaters and Manhattan Beach natives Sand Section.

Where/When: Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Road, Palos Verdes Estates; July 3, 5 p.m.

Why Go: Pack a picnic (or indulge in one of the event's tasty food vendors) and relax to the sounds of the Peninsula Symphonic Winds. Don't forget a blanket or lawn chair!

4TH OF JULY KIDS POOL PARTY

Where/When: Begg Pool, 1402 N. Peck Ave., Manhattan Beach; July 4, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Why Go: Bring the kids and cool off on this hot summer day, you've got a night full of fireworks ahead of you! Sponsored by the City of Manhattan Beach.

4TH OF JULY COMMUNITY CELEBRATION 2011 AND FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR

Where/When: Recreation Park, 401 E. Sheldon St., El Segundo; July 4, 10 a.m. through fireworks display beginning at 9 p.m.

Why Go: From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., activities will include a hula hoop contest, water balloon toss, sack races, and more. A pie-eating contest will begin at 1 p.m. and a watermelon eating contest at 1:30. Live music from 5-9 p.m. General public grandstand seating at Stevenson Park $3 per seat. Tickets available at Rec Park Checkout Building. Must be in seats by 8:30 p.m. Tickets $5 per seat at the gate, as space permits.

AN OLD FASHIONED 4TH OF JULY

Where/When: Malaga Cove School, 375 Via Almar, Palos Verdes Estates; July 4.

Why Go: Enjoy a pie-eating contest, bike parade, music and fun at this Independence Day Festival to honor Lieutenant Colonel Jason Morris, Commanding Officer 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines! While you're there, look for Boy Scout Troop 257's BBQ fundraiser at the school.

4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS SHOW

Where/When: Seaside Lagoon, 200 Portofino Way, Redondo Beach; July 4, 2 - 10:30 p.m.

Why Go: Celebrate 4th of July at this festival, featuring live music, the largest Redondo Beach community sing-a-long, food, and of course, a breathtaking fireworks display at nightfall.

Pricing: $15-$22

4TH OF JULY VISUAL SHOW WITH DJ JAM

Where/When: Patrick Malloys, 50 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach; July 4, 9 p.m.

Why Go: After DJ JAM parties around town on his solar-powered Buddy Wagon, he'll end the night at Patrick Malloys for music, dancing and an "all-out rager!"
