Mandarin Comes to MB Middle School

School board approves four texts from BetterChinese publisher to serve as basis of Mandarin language instruction at middle and high schools in Manhattan Beach.

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District board on Wednesday approved the adoption of four separate Mandarin language instructional texts. The series, Discovering Chinese, by publisher BetterChinese, will be implemented into the 7th- and 8th-grade Mandarin language courses for students attending Manhattan Beach Middle School.

The Mandarin language is a new addition to the district's curriculum for 2011-2012. This school year, 59 7th-graders are enrolled in Chinese I and are using supplemental materials for instruction. The board hopes that the newly approved textbooks will provide base texts for study purposes.

Chinese II will be offered to 8th-grade students in the 2012-2013 academic year. The two courses combined, 7th- and 8th-grade Chinese, will equal one year of foreign language credit.
