MBUSD Announces Teachers of the Year

Eight teachers receive honors for their work. One is named District Teacher of the Year and advances for consideration as one of the "best of the best" educators in K-12 schools by the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District announced its 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year award winners at its school board meeting Wednesday night.

“It’s extremely exciting and I’m overwhelmed,” said Tanya Sanchez, selected as Grand View Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year. “I was very proud just to be nominated. It’s nice to be thought of in such a positive way.”

Mathematics teacher and co-chairperson of the mathematics department at Mira Costa High School Linda Gesualdi was selected as both the Mira Costa High School Teacher of the Year and the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Teacher of the Year.

Executive Director of Educational Services Carolyn Seaton said it was a very difficult process choosing from several worthy nominees before presenting the winners with their awards.

“We had to choose the one that will represent our district,” Seaton said. “It’s inspiring to see them do what they do.”

Other winners announced at the meeting are Jane Gervais as Manhattan Beach Preschool Teacher of the Year; Rebecca Allen as Manhattan Beach Middle School Teacher of the Year; Jennifer Simon as Meadows Elementary Teacher of the Year; Sondra Abrams as Pacific Elementary School Teacher of the Year; Anne Carlin as Robinson Elementary School Teacher of the Year and Erynne Hart as Pennekamp Elementary School Teacher of the Year.

Each winner was given a plaque recognizing them as the Teacher of the Year for their respective school.

While presenting Hart with her honor, Seaton said one of Hart’s own fourth grade students said it best when they found out she was chosen.

“That’s not a surprise,” Seaton said the student had replied. “She is truly awesome!”

Gesualdi advances for consideration as one of "best of the best" educators in K-12 schools by the Los Angeles County Office of Education. MBUSD's District Teacher of the Year for 2010-2011 Linda Okumura of Pacific Elementary was one of 16 winners selected from a pool of 69 teachers for the L.A. County distinction.
