MCHS Senior Earns Sandpipers Scholarship

Sarah Gruman is one of 12 seniors recently awarded a scholarship by the Sandpipers organization. Students from Redondo Union, Palos Verdes, Leuzinger, Bishop Montgomery and other South Bay school receive scholarships, too.

Mira Costa High student Sarah Gruman has received a scholarship from Sandpipers, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to serving the needs of the South Bay through a variety of charitable and philanthropic programs.

Sarah joined 11 other Sandpipers scholarship recipients at a reception and dinner on May 15. Scholarships were awarded to seniors from Redondo Union, Palos Verdes, Leuzinger, Bishop Montgomery, Torrance, Gardena and Narbonne high schools.

The 12 scholarship winners have an average weighted GPA of 4.26 and contributed an average of 33 hours of community service, according to Julie Stewart, director of publicity for Sandpipers.

Scholarships are based on a student's academic achievement, community and school involvement, leadership, and financial need, said Stewart.

Sandpipers' scholarship program, which funds qualified students in all four grades of high school, awarded more than $150,000 in 2012 to 12 freshmen and 33 upper classmen in high school, typically supporting more than 40 students a year.
