Mira Costa Routs Long Beach Jordan

The Mustangs continue tournament play today at 3 p.m. at Inglewood High School.

The Mira Costa girls basketball team plays at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Inglewood High School gym in Playa del Rey after beating Long Beach Jordan 45-26 Wednesday during the Inglewood Holiday Tip-Off Classic.

The Mustangs have won their first two games in the tournament, defeating Reseda 63-51 on Tuesday. They took a loss in their first game of the preseason at home against South Torrance 50-47 within 24 hours of having a new head coach handed to them.

Freshman Keilani Ikehara led the team in scoring Wednesday with nine points followed by sophomore Shaylyn Austin's eight. Junior Ashley Reese contributed six points, with freshman Meghan Peneueta scoring five, and juniors Rachel Humphrey and Taylor Lewis scoring four points each. Freshman Haley Tojo added two and junior Cameryn Chan one as the team took a first-quarter lead and never looked back.

Ikehara shot an incredible 75 percent followed by Lewis' 67 percent.

Bay League plays begins on Jan. 10 against West Torrance. The Bay League includes Redondo Union, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Palos Verdes and Leuzinger high schools.

Why is it that when Mira Costa wins a game, the Patch can't wait to report it, yet when they lose, readers get total silence? Fact of the matter is that since this story was written, it was Mira Costa who got "routed" 3 straight times in subsequent games. They lost by 41 points to Alemany, 15 points to St. Bernard, and 19 points to Peninsula. Can anyone even remember the last time a Mira Costa girls basketball team ever lost to Bay League rival Peninsula? Looks like Mira Costa will be vying with Leuzinger to stay out of last place in Bay League this year. Let's give a round of applause to Principal Dale and the screwed up MB School Board!

Hi Bay League Fan, Thanks for weighing in on MB Patch. As you will see when checking out our MCHS sports coverage that not all games and teams are covered all the time. And we do and have covered Costa sports team losses and there will be more coverage of girls basketball and its season. We did cover their loss to South and will be catching up with the team during its next two weeks of practice and upcoming games. The Bay League season begins in January so all of the pre-season games are warmups to the regular season, where stats matter so much more. I've watched the girls team play three times, and reported on two of those, one a loss and one a win. Yes, MCHS lost three games in a row in the Inglewood tournament after winning its first two in the tourney... Such things happen. The newest head coach has had fewer than five official practices with her team... hardly enough to base how the team is going to do in Bay League. Time will reveal how well the team does. These early loses are just that; early losses. Go Miranda, go Mustangs! Chin up! Not everything is determined by the score of a game. Character, patience, resilience, team spirit and talent can triumph over predictions, forecasting, odds. Hang tough, girls. Work hard, stay focused and don't succumb to the naysayers.

The scores in these games doesn't tell the whole story. What it tells, is that they lost and their coach needs to be fired. I've been at those games and Mira Costa has won 2-3 quarters of each game but just can't overcome the 20+ point differential from the first quarter. You would think she would change up some things, but comes back with the same starting line-up with the same result, down 20+ and then have to play catch up. The game is lost in the 1st quarter. And that's not saying that the opposing team is putting in their bench. These quarters are being playing with their starters also. Girls basketball at Mira Costa is a mess. Principal Dale needs to fix this or this season is done before it even starts!

Girls Bball Fan's solution is to change coaches AGAIN? That would make 4 coaches in about 6 weeks. Wow, you crazy ass MB parents have officially passed the PV parents as being the most obnoxious and ridiculous parents in the Bay league!

Just so you know Jordin... I'm not a crazy ass MB parent. Just a lover of girls basketball. And if being obnoxious and ridiculous is what it takes to get that program where it needs to be, than so be it!
