Mira Costa Cheer Takes Top Honor at Pepperdine University

The Mira Costa Cheer Squad recently scored big at an official Universal Cheerleaders Association competition last month.

Held at Pepperdine University, Mira Costa Cheer Squad members took top honors in several categories, including the overall "Top Banana Award" in varsity and junior varsity competition.

The varsity squad also was feted as Superior in Fight Song, recognized as a Superior Squad, took 3rd place in Extreme Routine and had six All Americans.

The junior varsity squad  was recognized as a Superior Squad, took 3rd place in Extreme Routine and had two All Americans.

Coached by Monica Bloodgood, in her first season at Mira Costa High School, members of the Varsity Cheer Squad are: Hannah Anderson, Kaela Ayala, Amanda Betts, Ashley Cohen, Alex Daniels, Nicki Durazo, Nicole Gaines, Amanda Gale, Ashley Gardner, Amanda Goetz, Sydney Hom, Amanda Johnson, Kelli Killman, Saige Ratchford, Raina Serota, Nicole Sumen and Katie von Behren.

Members of the Junior Varsity Cheer Squad are: Rose Darcy, Hayle Dumas, Kelsey Gravo, Melissa Guthrie, Breanna Harris, Linda Leija, Allison Lockard-Loob, Ashley Marckel, Star Masterton, Sammy Mausner, Kylie Newell, Leatha Parie, Noelle Parker, Jordan Salim, Kayla Thompson, Kayla Vandermark and Ali Wu.

You can see the Mira Costa Cheer Squad root for the Mustang football team on Friday, Sept. 13 in Downey when varsity tackles a Downey High School team beginning at 7 p.m. The next home game is Friday, Sept. 20 against South Torrance. Game time is 7 p.m. in Waller Stadium.
