Mira Costa Girls Lose to PV

The Mustangs basketball team comes within two points at 41-39 only to have PV's star player come through with eight points down the stretch for a 51-44 victory.

The Mira Costa girls knew they had a tall order Tuesday night at home facing the Sea Kings, which features one of the best and tallest basketball players in the South Bay, senior forward Kelsey Brockway.

And the Mustangs did everything they could to try to contain the Sea King star but Brockway’s size and talent was just too much for the scrappy Mustangs as they fell, 51-44, in Bay League play.

“She’s good, really good,” Mustang forward Ashley Reece said. “I thought that we did enough to contain her in the third quarter but like any good player you can’t stop her forever.”

Brockway, who has a scholarship to continue her basketball career at Pepperdine in the fall, finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, including scoring the last eight points down the stretch to lead Palos Verdes to victory.

Despite the big game from Brockway, the Mustangs looked poised to pull off an upset after trailing by double digits for much of the first three quarters. Mira Costa trailed 34-18 midway through the third quarter before mounting a furious run.

The Mustangs (10-12, 1-4) outscored the Sea Kings 21-6 and cut the lead to 41-39 with slightly more than two minutes remaining in the contest. The run was led by Reece, who had a team high 13 points with seven rebounds and four assists, and freshman forward Meghan Peneueta as well as a terrific defensive effort by the Mustangs who forced Palos Verdes into taking bad shots.

“I thought we could have won that game,” Peneueta said. “We were so close but unfortunately just like much of the season, turnovers have really hurt us.”

After trimming the lead to two points, the Mustangs had three consecutive turnovers and were unable to stop Brockway as the Sea Kings pulled out the win.

“We are playing a lot better than we were at the beginning of the season and are starting to come together more as a team,” Reece said. “We’ve been through a lot this season but we have come though it and are starting to play like we are capable of playing.”

Brockway helped ice her team's victory against Redondo Union with a 3-pointer in the final 28 seconds of a 54-50 win last week. In that game, she had 29 points, according to a news report.
