Baseball and Softball Seasons Begin in Manhattan Beach

A bustling parade leads to American Martyrs Field where Little Leaguers compete in the Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Competition.

Downtown Manhattan Beach and the American Martyrs field were awash in team colors Saturday as the 2011 Little League baseball season got off to an exciting start.

The day began with a parade that snaked from Valley Drive to the field at American Martyrs. Teams, in an array of colors, proudly displayed their banners during the march. All four City Council candidates took part to drum up support before the March 8 election.

A Pitch, Hit and Run competition headlined the activities at the American Martyrs field. Manhattan Beach Little League and Manhattan Beach Girls Softball hosted the event for children ages 7 - 14, who were divided into four age groups. The contest gives them the chance to advance to the National Finals at the 2011 Major League Baseball All-Star game.
