Visually Impaired Catch Waves at Surf Camp
Kanoa Aquatics of Manhattan Beach offers a unique program for the blind but adventurous.
A handful of children paddled against rolling waves under the careful watch of surf instructors. Summer brings many aspiring surfers to the beach, but for this young bunch, the board action was extra special.
They are all visually impaired.
Kanoa Aquatics, which hosts surf camps year-round, teamed up with the Braille Institute to provide these kids a one-of-a-kind surfing experience.

So far, the students seem to be enjoying themselves. Their progress has even surprised Charlie Beck, the camp director.
"I think I'm a lot more scared than they are," Beck admitted. "I don't understand how you could even learn to surf being blind."

Weekly lessons are taught from June to September, Tuesday through Thursday and are held on the beach at 45th Street in Manhattan Beach. For more information, visit the Kanoa Aquatics website.
