County and City Officials to Talk Jobs

Mayor Mitch Ward will join other government officials at a news conference Thursday morning to discuss unemployment.

Manhattan Beach Mayor Mitch Ward will join government officials at a news conference Thursday in Redondo Beach to emphasize the need for more federally funded employment programs in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, Rep. Jane Harman, Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto, Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin and Hermosa Beach Mayor Michael DiVirgilio are also expected to attend the meeting.

Supervisor Knabe will discuss the impact of a "10,000 jobs" program he introduced in March 2009. The program used nearly $200 million in federal stimulus money to create temporary subsidized employment through the South Bay Workforce Investment Board, resulting in more than 11,000 jobs in private, public and nonprofit businesses, according to county reports.
